Affirmations against Temptation

Our pilgrimage on earth cannot be exempt from trial. We progress by means of trial. No one knows himself except through trial, or receives a crown except after victory, or strives except against an enemy or temptations.”

– St. Augustine

When temptations and trials come our way, they present an opportunity to rediscover ourselves in a new way. Depending on how we handle them, they can become a source of confidence and strength for the journey ahead – battle scars that we wear proudly as a reminder that we are undefeated, crushed down but not destroyed, and that our joy yet cometh. Yet, in the heat of the fire, we need encouragement to persevere in our resistance, because even the best of men get weary under pressure.

As C.S. Lewis once said – “A silly idea is current that good people do not know what temptation means. This is an obvious lie. Only those who try to resist temptation know how strong it is… A man who gives in to temptation after five minutes simply does not know what it would have been like an hour later. That is why bad people, in one sense, know very little about badness — they have lived a sheltered life by always giving in.” Therefore, we must embrace the resistance, it is a part of living and walking in holiness. Don’t look at temptation as something only for the weak, or see falling into temptation as something only for those who have wicked hearts. Temptation is simply a part of life.

As Christians, we are not immune from temptation, Christ Himself was tempted by Satan! Until our flesh is redeemed from sin upon the second coming of Christ, we will constantly be tempted to commit sin. But in reality, every temptation is an opportunity to overcome and to get victory over sin! With the word of God as our weapon, we can always resist temptation! Believe that God has a way of escape for you. Temptation is NOT sin, not until you agree to partake in it, so the way of resistance is the way of escape. The power to resist lies in the Scriptures – it is written…wherein we have been promised a way out of every temptation. May God’s truth protect you as you arm yourself with His Word and resist even the most fiery trials.

No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.

1 Corinthians 10:13 (NKJV)
