Once again, we’re thinking about suffering. It feels like I have written multiple times on this subject since the inception of this blog, from various angles or touchpoints, and yet I’m just not done thinking or talking about it. Trust me the irony of the phrase “Enjoy Suffering” is not lost on me. It’s an oxymoron of the highest caliber. Suffering often doesn’t bring enjoyment to the flesh, instead, it is filled with uncertainty, distress, and despair. But on closer look, perhaps the phrase “suffering and smiling” is not so far-fetched according to scripture.

The two brothers are opposite sides of the same coin. While the younger son thought his identity was lost by his bad works, the older thought his identity was preserved by his good works. Both were wrong. Identity is independent of works. Identity is a matter of grace.

Excellence and holiness must become synonymous to us. We excel not only in our work, but in acts of charity towards our neighbours. Daniel stood before Kings. So did Abraham, Moses, Joseph, Paul and Jesus. They could not have done this if they did not strike the right balance between inward character and outward actions.

Truth is the daughter of time. If we knew it all, there would be no need for faith. We know in part, for God alone is all-knowing. We must be content in paths He chooses to reveal whilst trusting Him to lead us through paths unknown.
